Evropská strana zelených: Nová vláda v České republice: Trumpismus dorazil do srdce Evropy

Today, the new Czech government led by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has been voted into power. It is composed of three parties: ANO 2011 and Motorists for Themselves (AUTO) are part of the Patriots.eu European political family. The Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) party is part of the Europe of Sovereign Nations political family, which is led by the German Alternative für Deutschland (AfD). This government is from all European governments the one with the most members of the far-right political families Patriots.eu and ESN.

Gabriela Svárovská, MP and the co-chair of Zelení, the Czech Member Party of the European Greens says: ‘The incoming Czech government led by oligarch Andrej Babiš is yet another example of how anti-green and anti-climate agenda operates in Central and Eastern Europe - intertwining fossil-fuel and agricultural industry interests while adopting the lines of Russian propaganda. Andrej Babiš still has not resolved his massive conflict of interest regarding his ownership of the Czech agricultural conglomerate, Agrofert. He also faces an ongoing investigation for subsidy fraud. It is not surprising therefore, that he has allied himself with parties who have promised not to lift his immunity. The entire country will pay the price for it.’

Vula Tsetsi, Co-Chair of the European Green Party, added: ‘Today is a dark day for the Czech republic, and a dark day for democracy in the European Union. A far-right coalition, led by Andrej Babiš and allied with parties that deny democracy, deny climate change, and echo authoritarian and Kremlin narratives, has taken power. This is not just a national shift - it threatens European unity, fundamental rights, our collective response to the climate crisis, and support for Ukraine at a critical moment. Yet even in this moment, there is hope: the return of Zelení to the Chamber of Deputies shows that a resilient, pro-European, democratic alternative still exists in Czech society. We will continue to fight for democracy, human rights, and climate action, now more urgently than ever.’

Ciarán Cuffe, Co-Chair of the European Green Party, warned: ‘There is a real risk that Prime Minister Babiš will align himself with Viktor Orbán and Robert Fico to obstruct European support for Ukraine and further European integration. There are already clear signs of this - the three leaders secured an opt out for their countries from the financial contribution the EU is providing to Ukraine’s defense for 2026-2027 through joint borrowing. This is yet another reminder of why the European Union must move beyond the unanimity rule in foreign and security policy, which allows a handful of governments to block action supported by the vast majority of Europeans.’

Background

One of the coalition leaders, speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Tomio Okamura, has already signalled the government’s geopolitical orientation by describing the Ukrainian government as a “military junta”, echoing Kremlin-aligned narratives and coinciding with the removal of the Ukrainian flag from the Czech Parliament.

Serious concern also surrounds the Motorists for Themselves - AUTO party, set to take over key ministries including foreign affairs and the environment. The party denies climate change and brands green politics as “eco-terrorism”, while threatening that “Green blood would flow” if they take over the ministry of environment.

The government programme confirms the political shift: reliance on gas and coal, rejection of the Green Deal and the the 2035 combustion engine ban, motorway expansion, restrictions on NGO funding, political pressure on public media, corporate tax cuts, and an emphasis on a marriage based, tradition family model as the basis of the Czech society (same sex marriage is not legal in the Czech Republic).

The incoming far-right government is preparing the biggest assault on civil society institutions and civil rights since the fall of the communist regime, accompanied by an unprecedented attack on public media and a complete abdication of responsibility for protecting citizens from disinformation.

Last year’s return of the Greens to the Chamber of Deputies after fifteen years makes it possible to contest the rise of extremists directly and at close range, not from the outside, but from the benches of parliament itself.

The election of Gabriela Svárovská from Prague and of Irena Ferčíková Konečná from the South Moravian Region (Brno) is the chance for Czech Greens to provide a strong, pro-democratic and pro-European voice, to hold the new government accountable, and to offer citizens an alternative vision for the future.
