Parliament will hold its second reading on this Directive with the purpose of setting standards of quality and safety for the donation, procurement, testing, processing etc of human tissues and cells. EPP-ED rapporteur Peter Liese has negotiated a compromise position with the Council and recommends its adoption by Parliament.
The Directive shall cover all tissues and cells which are used for application to the human body, excluding blood and blood products as well as organs, tissues or cells of animal origin. The Council has agreed to the rapporteur's proposals to insert a general reference to aspects voluntary unpaid donations. Amendments adopted by the Committee cover compensation for donors, traceability, donor consent and their anonymity.
