Liberal Democrats Southampton: Novoroční poselství našeho nového předsedy, Richarda Blackmana
7. ledna 2019 | Liberal Democrats Southampton
As the new Chair of Southampton Liberal Democrats, I would like to thank you for placing your trust in me to guide us through the year ahead. I will do my very best to fulfil that trust.
What does 2019 hold for us?
Our liberal and social democratic values remain under threat from Brexit and the populism of the hard Right and the hard Left. The financial crash and subsequent austerity mean we need to reform our broken economic system and strengthen the social bonds in our communities.
Our belief in freedom, equality, internationalism and environmentalism do though mean that we are well placed to heal the wounds in our society and build for the future. I also think that the two big parties cannot hold together in their current form and that could well open new opportunities for us.
Brexit will continue to dominate the political landscape and we as a party will continue to work for an exit from Brexit in the weeks ahead. It's also possible that we will be campaigning in a referendum and/or a general election in the course of 2019.
Southampton campaigns
Local elections take place on Thursday 2 May. We hope to make significant progress in our bid to regain seats on Southampton City Council. The response on the doorsteps where we have campaigned has been positive and engaged but there is still a lot to be done to ensure our message resonates.
Southampton Liberal Democrats have been working hard campaigning on important issues across our city, including:
* Improving the dreadful air quality in the city
* Making our roads safer for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike
* Reducing our environmental impact by demanding better recycling city-wide
We will be highlighting these and other core issues in the months ahead.
Southampton Liberal Democrats - campaign teamJoining our campaigns
If you would like to get more involved in our campaigning activities there are many ways to do so. These range from administrative work at home, writing and producing content for our website and social media platforms, through to donating, joining door-knocking teams talking to residents, and of course delivering leaflets. Just an hour or two a month could make a big difference.
Please don't hesitate to get in touch if there is anything you would like to discuss with me. If you are able to help us in any way with our campaigning this year, please complete this form, or drop me an email at chair@sotonld.org.uk.
I look forward to working and campaigning with you in 2019.
With very best wishes,
Richard Blackman, Chair, Southampton Liberal Democrats
