Švédské předsednictví v Radě EU: Andreas Carlgren zdůraznil význam klimatické dohody
22. července 2009 | Švédské předsednictví v Radě EU
“I want to cut a climate agreement in Copenhagen”, writes Minister for the Environment Andreas Carlgren on a slate. He is very busy with preparations for the meeting of EU ministers in Åre on 23-25 July. But he also finds time to make a badge with a personal climate change message. While the meeting is going on, everyone can make their own climate badge at the Presidency's exhibition outside the railway station.
The EU’s environment and energy ministers are meeting in Åre to discuss how the EU and the world can convert to an eco-efficient economy. It is a question of seeing the economic crisis and the challenge of climate change as a lever, where environmental technology, renewable energy, increased energy efficiency and sustainable development can contribute to reduced emissions and increased growth.
“We need an agreement in Copenhagen that is sufficient to tackle the challenge of climate change. The EU has presented the most ambitious climate change goals that any group of countries has ever set. We will continue to apply pressure in the international climate change negotiations. There is no alternative to an ambitious agreement in Copenhagen”, says Minister for the Environment Andreas Carlgren.
The climate agreement that will be concluded in Copenhagen is intended to replace the Kyoto Protocol from the year 2013 onwards.
“There is a lot of strength in the commitment that people across Europe show for the environment and the climate. That strength gives us the support we need to continue to apply pressure to the countries of the world for an ambitious climate change agreement, but what each person does for the climate also makes an important contribution to reducing emissions in Europe as a whole”, continues Andreas Carlgren.
Almost half a billion people live in the EU. If just a fraction of all these take action against climate change, then things will start to happen.
“For example, I am someone who needs to move around a lot. Walking is both good for your health and for the climate", concludes Andreas Carlgren, before he hurries off to the next meeting.
The Presidency’s climate exhibition is open 10.00-21.00 on Thursday, 23 July and 10.00-18.00 on Friday, 24 July. The exhibition is located outside Åre railway station.
