WWF: Gruzie vyhlásila nové chráněné území Pšav-Chevsureti

Over the past 20 years, WWF is actively promoting establishment of protected areas in the Caucasus Ecoregion. The new protected areas officially announced on 28 April 2014 cover 110,205 ha, thus increasing the protected area coverage by 1,6% to exceed the 9% of the country’s total area.
The new PAs play significant role in ensuring connectivity in the Eastern Greater Caucasus, and together with other PAs of Georgia, Azerbaijan and Russia create long protected landscape.
The Protected Areas are an important contribution in conservation of leopard in one of the four main distribution sites in the Caucasus, as well as other key species - Bezoar goat, endemic Eastern Caucasian Tur, and species included in the National Red List, such as brown bear, European lynx, Caucasian red deer, chamois and others.
Not least important is that establishing of PAs in remote area of Georgia will substantially assist local people in increasing alternative income and improving livelihood through offering sustainable development alternatives.
Since 1995 more than 1/3 of the total coverage of PAs of Georgia has been established through the assistance of WWF in close cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection and the Agency of Protected Areas.
